Where is Long Island?
Located on the southeast part of New York, it geographically consists of four counties: Queens, Brooklyn, Nassau and Suffolk - however most people consider it to be just the two counties of Nassau and Suffolk. Queens and Brooklyn are actually burroughs of New York City. It extends out into the Atlantic Ocean on the eastern coast of the United States and is the longest and largest island in the country.
The western half consists of the Nassau County neighborhoods. There are 3 towns: Hempstead, North Hempstead, and Oyster Bay and 2 cities: Long Beach and Glen Cove.
The eastern half consists of the Suffolk County neighborhoods. They include the towns of Babylon, Brookhaven, East Hampton, Huntington, Islip, Riverhead, Shelter Island, Smithtown, Southampton, and Southold.
Long Island has been said to be shaped like a fish. As you travel east to the town of Riverhead, the land splits into 2 forks: the "north fork" and "south fork". The north fork is famous for the many wineries and is knows as the "Long Island Wine Country", a popular tourist attraction. The south fork is home to the Hamptons, with many private beaches, upscale shops, and sprawling mansions.
NYC is an easy drive and depending on where you are on Long Island, the trip isn't far. The longest drive may be about 2 hours if you are traveling from the eastern most tip of Suffolk County. We have the Long Island railroad, a commuter train system with over 124 stations throughout the island to help you get around. And we have a bus system that interconnects the neighborhoods, train stations, colleges, shopping malls, and attractions.
And for those who do not know, there are many celebrities from here!
Some of them are Mariah Carey from Huntington, Stephen Baldwin from Massapequa, and Lindsay Lohan from Cold Spring Harbor and Merrick.
